Car Broke Down? 6 Tips for Drivers

One of a driver’s biggest fears is breaking down on the side of a road in an unfamiliar area. Be prepared with the proper tools and awareness on how to handle yourself in this type of situation. These six tips for drivers will help you stay safe the next time you experience a breakdown.

1. Turn on your hazard lights. This warns approaching drivers of a problem with your vehicle. Do not turn them off until your car is moved from the side of the road. If your battery is dead, hang a white towel out of your window indicating your car is broken down.

2. Pull over. Coast along the shoulder of the road until you are free from any curves behind you. This will help with any blind spots you may have when pulling back into traffic when your car is running again or when it is towed.

3. Stay in your car, if possible. You are safer sitting in your vehicle than standing on the side of the road in traffic. If you must get out of your vehicle, make sure the traffic is clear before you open your door.

4. Avoid rolling forward or backward on a hill by setting your emergency brake and turning your front tires away from the road.

5. Call for assistance. Call for roadside assistance if you have a provider. If not, call a tow truck or 911 for further assistance. Do not respond to anyone who comes to help you with whom you are not familiar or comfortable.

6. Pop the hood of your vehicle. This indicates that your car is broken down, and you need assistance.

Be prepared ahead of time if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation. Keep emergency flares, blankets and a first aid kit in the trunk of your car in case of a breakdown or emergency.
